According to statistics, this marks the first time a Spanish player has scored in a FIFA World Cup knockout stage match in 16 years. The last occurrence was Iniesta's winning goal against the Netherlands in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final.

Spain did score during the 2018 FIFA World Cup knockout stages in Russia, but the goal was an own goal scored by Russian player Ignashevich.
