Batistuta spoke candidly about his playing career, stating that he never enjoyed football.

The former Fiorentina and Roma striker told La Gazzetta dello Sport what he missed about his playing days: "Nothing. I didn't enjoy playing, partly because of the pain, and partly because I knew people paid to watch me. I didn't allow myself to enjoy the game. Every time I scored, I felt a responsibility to deliver my best performance. Besides, I wasn't born Maradona; I had to rely on hard work. If it were today, how many goals would I score? I don't know, but I definitely could have played one or two more years, considering how many tackles I took."
