Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón set a new FIFA World Cup clean sheet record in Spain's 3-0 victory over Austria in the Round of 16. Italian goalkeeping legend Zenga congratulated him but also humorously noted that Simón's record spanned two FIFA World Cups, while his own was achieved in a single tournament.

With this clean sheet, Unai Simón extended his run of consecutive clean sheets across the last two FIFA World Cups to 519 minutes, breaking Zenga's 36-year-old record of 517 minutes. Zenga had previously recorded a 517-minute clean sheet streak at the 1990 Italy FIFA World Cup.

Speaking as a match commentator for RSI Sport, Zenga stated, "Records are meant to be broken, and this day was bound to come sooner or later."

However, he then added with a laugh, "I'm happy that this record stood for 36 years. By the way, I set this record in a single FIFA World Cup, not across two. Of course, it doesn't really matter; I've been proud of this record for 36 years."

The legendary Inter goalkeeper also joked, "In Italy, no one remembers this record, and no one cares."

When discussing why goalkeeping records are often overlooked, Zenga said, "A goalkeeper's clean sheet record is always easily put aside. If someone scores 10 or 12 goals, everyone talks about goal-scoring records, but people almost never talk about goalkeepers."
