Granit Xhaka is to remain at Sunderland this window despite the advances of Chelsea.

The Wearside club's stance has remained unchanged throughout Chelsea's pursuit: that the Swiss international has never been available for transfer, at any price.

Though the 33-year-old was attracted by the prospect of reuniting with Xabi Alonso, having enjoyed a successful spell under him at Bayer Leverkusen, Xhaka has reaffirmed his commitment to Sunderland following discussions with the club.

The opportunity to lead Sunderland in European competition, together with the club's long-term ambition and trajectory, were decisive factors in his decision.

Xhaka's strong rapport with Sunderland supporters and his connection with the club have also played an important role in his desire to continue his journey at the Stadium of Light.

Chelsea had an £8million bid dismissed initially, which Sunderland regarded as insulting.

Former Arsenal midfielder Xhaka has two years left on his Sunderland contract, having signed for the club for £13m last summer. He is currently away at the World Cup, with Switzerland through to the last-16 after a 2-0 win over Algeria.
