Ashour's goal gave Egypt the lead against Australia in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match.

Ashour's goal also marked Egypt's long-awaited return to scoring in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage. Their previous goal in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage was scored by Abdulrahman Fawzi on May 27, 1934, in a 2-4 loss to Hungary.

This meant Egypt set a record for the longest gap between two knockout-stage goals in FIFA World Cup history, with a 92-year interval between their two goals.
