After the German team was eliminated in the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup, Muller, a member of the 2014 FIFA World Cup winning team, openly stated that he believed German football faced fundamental problems.

The Bayern legend said that the German Football Association "must act now" and called for: "After five consecutive disappointing major tournaments, we need a solution that brings new, deep thinking."
Muller added that Germany needs "modern player development that is thoroughly implemented and consistent with future game ideas," and emphasized: "We need a sense of responsibility, expertise, and the courage to push for necessary changes, so that in the future we can once again rise to the occasion at the decisive moments on the world football stage."
For Muller, who plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps, the reconstruction called for involves many issues: "Are all people truly aware that the world's top level has left us behind? What can we learn from the training methods and playing styles of other countries? What kind of style should the German national team rely on to succeed in the future, and what types of players need to be developed? How can we become a tough 'tournament team' again in the short term for the 2028 European Championship?"
He believes that action must be taken immediately. Speaking about the loss to Paraguay, Muller's assessment was: "We wanted to do it, but we couldn't. I saw a team and a group of players who understood their responsibility to German football as a whole, and this was clearly reflected in their fighting spirit and commitment. But from a sporting perspective, nothing that happened on the field was surprising."
Muller wrote that the national team "does have players" who "can make fans excited in some individual rounds, but as a whole, they often falter even against seemingly lower-ranked teams." He also said that stability in the game plan and a clear central axis "are nowhere to be seen." If the "German machine" does not run smoothly, "we lack enough individual world-class ability to compensate," he concluded.
