Balogun was shown a red card in Wednesday's FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match, which the US team won 2-0 against Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the 64th minute, during a challenge for possession, VAR deemed that he had stamped on the ankle of Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Muharemović, resulting in a straight red card. Due to the suspension, he will miss the US team's Round of 16 match against Belgium. The 25-year-old told the media on Friday that he believed the controversial red card should only have been a yellow card.

A US Soccer Federation spokesperson told The Athletic that FIFA has informed them Balogun's penalty will not be extended, meaning he will be eligible to rejoin the squad after Monday's match against Belgium in Seattle, should the US team advance to the quarterfinals.
