World Cup history sees first shootout without European or South American teams

In the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, Australia and Egypt went to a penalty shootout. It was the 38th penalty shootout in FIFA World Cup history, and the first not to involve a European or South American team.

Of the previous 37 penalty shootouts, 34 involved European teams, while the other three featured South American teams: Paraguay's 5-3 penalty shootout win over Japan in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Round of 16, Uruguay's 4-2 penalty shootout win over Ghana in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals, and Brazil's 3-2 penalty shootout win over Chile in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

Previously, Asian teams participated in 3 penalty shootouts, with South Korea winning 1 and Japan losing 2; African teams participated in 3 penalty shootouts, with Morocco winning 2 and Ghana losing 1.

In the past, every knockout-stage match featured a group winner—most likely among the world’s top eight teams on paper—making it inherently difficult for teams outside Europe and South America. Moreover, historically, Europe and South America combined accounted for over half of all World Cup slots, resulting in an even higher proportion of their teams in the knockout stage.
