In the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, Australia and Egypt went to a penalty shootout. It was the 38th penalty shootout in FIFA World Cup history, and the first not to involve a European or South American team.

Of the previous 37 penalty shootouts, 34 involved European teams, while the other three featured South American teams: Paraguay's 5-3 penalty shootout win over Japan in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Round of 16, Uruguay's 4-2 penalty shootout win over Ghana in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Quarterfinals, and Brazil's 3-2 penalty shootout win over Chile in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
Previously, Asian teams participated in 3 penalty shootouts, with South Korea winning 1 and Japan losing 2; African teams participated in 3 penalty shootouts, with Morocco winning 2 and Ghana losing 1.
