In the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Egypt defeated Australia in a penalty shootout, becoming the fifth African team to win a knockout-stage match at the FIFA World Cup.

This match against Australia marked Egypt's second appearance in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage; in the 1934 FIFA World Cup, Egypt lost to Hungary in the Round of 16.

Egypt became the fifth African nation in history to win a match in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage, after Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, Ghana in 2010, and Morocco in 2022 and 2026.
