In the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, Australia lost 2-4 to Egypt on penalties, failing to advance to the Round of 16. Before the shootout, Australia's head coach, Tony Popovic, emulated Van Gaal's move from 12 years ago by changing goalkeepers.

Popovic replaced Patrick Beach, who had performed well during regular time, with 34-year-old veteran goalkeeper Ryan. However, Ryan failed to save any of the four penalties in the shootout, and Salah converted a Panenka against him, resulting in Australia's 2-4 defeat on penalties.

In the 2014 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, during the match between the Netherlands and Costa Rica, Netherlands coach Van Gaal replaced Cillessen with Krul before the penalty shootout. Krul guessed the correct direction five times in the shootout, saved two penalties, and helped the Netherlands secure their only penalty shootout victory in FIFA World Cup history (1 win, 4 losses).

At the time, Van Gaal described his decision as a gamble, but on this occasion, Popovic's gamble failed.

Furthermore, Popovic's decision to have center-back Souttar take the first penalty and 18-year-old defender Herington take one also drew criticism.
