On July 4th,(CEST), Egypt miraculously defeated Australia in a penalty shootout to return to the World Cup round of 16.

Thus, Egypt coach Hassan became the third African coach in history to win a World Cup knockout-stage match. The previous two to achieve this feat were Morocco's Walid Regragui and Morocco's Mohamed Wahbi.
The match against Australia marked Egypt's second appearance in the World Cup knockout stage in their history. Egypt had reached the round of 16 as early as the 1934 World Cup, but ultimately lost to Hungary and was eliminated.
Historically, Egypt has also become the 5th African nation in World Cup history to win a knockout-stage match. The teams that previously achieved this feat were Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, Ghana in 2010, and Morocco in 2022 and 2026.
However, Morocco's coach was the only African to have previously won a knockout-stage match.
