Former Liverpool midfielder Thiago recently expressed his admiration for Mainoo to Ferdinand on a show and clearly identified the Man United midfielder's most suitable position on the field.

When former Man United defender Ferdinand mentioned Mainoo, he admitted that he greatly admired the England international, who has yet to play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Thiago immediately echoed, "I like him very much too."
Ferdinand then asked about Mainoo's most suitable midfield position. The former Spain international emphasized that Mainoo is best suited to the No. 8 role.
"Number 8," Thiago said.
"I would let him play in this position because he can contribute defensively and be tough, and when he has the ball, he can help the defenders move it into the areas that decide the game.
"He can dribble, make tackles, and score goals; he is absolutely a No. 8.
"Based on his performances on the field, you cannot treat him as a No. 10 player at all. He must be kept in midfield as a No. 8, with a No. 6 behind him responsible for defensive cover. Once he gets the ball, he can pass, drive forward with it, and get into the penalty area. And if the No. 6 needs support, he can also track back in time."
Thiago also mentioned that there are still areas of Mainoo's game that need improvement, which is normal for a player his age.
He continued: "He is still young, and sometimes, because of his passion for the game, he overdoes it a bit. At times, he tries to do things on the field that are beyond his capabilities, but for his age, his performances are already quite amazing."
