After Egypt advanced to the round of 16 by defeating Australia in a penalty shootout, Egypt captain Salah spoke to the media.

On advancing
This is a historic moment. Before the match, I told my teammates that this might be the most important game of our lives. We had to give our all and enjoy the moment. I’m glad we won. It’s a shame for them (the opponents), but I’m happy we managed to make history.
You decided to take a Panenka penalty. How did you arrive at that decision? What were you thinking in that tense moment?
When you make a move like that in a match at this level, it requires experience and confidence... I made the decision at the last second. I did not know what the outcome would be, but I had to do it.
This might be the first time in history that you play against Messi. What are your thoughts?
Argentina still have to prove themselves on the field, and we must respect our opponents.
