In the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 in the US, Canada, and Mexico, Argentina narrowly defeated Cape Verde 3-2. Cristian Romero's 111th-minute goal was ultimately ruled an own goal by Cape Verdean center-back Diney.

This is the 14th own goal of this FIFA World Cup, surpassing the previous record of 12.
It was also the second own goal scored in extra time in FIFA World Cup history. The first occurred in 1954, during the group stage match between England and Belgium (in that FIFA World Cup, draws in the group stage also went to extra time, and only a draw after extra time was considered a draw). England's Dickinson scored an own goal in the 94th minute, and the match ultimately ended in a 4-4 draw.
Diney's own goal also became the first own goal scored in extra time in a FIFA World Cup knockout stage match.
