It is reported that, unable to bear the humiliation in South Korea, former South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo, who had previously resigned, suddenly fled to the United States after returning home.

According to South Korea's "JoongAng Ilbo", Hong Myung-bo suddenly went to the United States after returning to South Korea. Spanish media "Marca" commented that Hong Myung-bo "fled" his home country wearing a hat and a mask due to death threats in South Korea.

The South Korea national football team failed to advance to the top 32 in this FIFA World Cup, and head coach Hong Myung-bo resigned as a result. Although he returned to South Korea on June 30, he quickly flew to the United States just two days later. The JoongAng Ilbo stated that he arrived at Los Angeles International Airport in the United States on July 2, local time. Korean media "Asia Economy" reported that Hong Myung-bo may have avoided media interviews by using a VIP channel when leaving Los Angeles Airport.

Before his departure, Hong Myung-bo, wearing a hat and a mask to avoid attention, told reporters at Incheon International Airport in South Korea: "I have something to say, but I believe the truth will eventually come out." He also said, "I cannot determine when I will return to South Korea."

MBC (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation) added that when asked about rumors of internal team conflicts leading to his dismissal, Hong Myung-bo denied these claims, stating, "There were no internal conflicts within the entire team."

After the South Korea national football team was eliminated in the group stage of the FIFA World Cup, Hong Myung-bo announced his resignation on June 28. However, this did not quell the doubts, with many fans claiming that his appointment was irregular. According to media reports, since the Korea Football Association reappointed Hong Myung-bo as head coach in July 2024, there have been continuous domestic disputes. The National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee even summoned KFA officials and Hong Myung-bo to attend a hearing, questioning the unfairness and lack of transparency in the coaching selection process.

On June 28, a South Korean online community also saw death threats against Hong Myung-bo, with the poster claiming to be a 41-year-old American citizen and threatening to commit a crime at Incheon Airport when he returned home on the 30th. The police considered this act to constitute a criminal threat and are tracking down the identity of the poster, whose post has since been deleted. In addition, many fans on social media claimed they would throw eggs at Hong Myung-bo at the airport.
