In the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match between Brazil and Norway, 35-year-old Norwegian goalkeeper Nyland saved a penalty taken by Bruno Guimaraes. The Norwegian national team's main goalkeeper is currently a substitute at Sevilla, having only played 18 times this season, including the FIFA World Cup.

In the 13th minute of the first half, Nyland made an accurate judgment, diving in the correct direction to block Bruno Guimaraes' penalty, preventing Brazil from scoring first. This is Nyland's first FIFA World Cup appearance, but he is not the starting goalkeeper at his club.

Nyland is Norway's undisputed starting goalkeeper, but has only played 7 times for Sevilla in the 2025-26 season, with the team's starting goalkeeper being 32-year-old Greek international Vlachodimos.

In the previous season, Nyland was Sevilla's starting goalkeeper and played 31 times in the 2024-25 season. However, before that, his club appearances were inconsistent, having not played more than 30 times in a single season since 2017-18.

Nyland's career began at Norwegian club Hødd, where he played from 2007 to 2015, before transferring to German club Ingolstadt. Since then, he has also played in Germany, England, and Spain.

Before the match against Brazil, Nyland expressed his confidence in Norway's defense: "We know we have to defend well. Given the progress made over the past two or three years and the current results, I am very proud of the defensive teammates in front of me. We know we are capable of stopping any opponent."

Despite being a substitute at Sevilla, Nyland has a completely different status in the Norwegian national team. Before this FIFA World Cup match against Brazil, he had played 3 times, only missing the final group stage match against France, when Norway rested almost all of their main players.

In addition to saving Guimaraes' penalty, Nyland made two crucial saves in the first half. He first defused Gabriel Martinelli's threat from the left wing, and then blocked Vinicius' shot inside the box before halftime.
