England's Anthony Gordon found himself on the end of a tongue-lashing by Mexico manager Javier Aguirre overnight - but they both saw the funny side.

Gordon made the mistake of treading near the potty-mouthed veteran shortly after the game's first hydration break.

Aguirre, 67, looked the winger up and down and in a bid to get his attention, barked: 'Gordon!'

Despite the deafening noise in the Estadio Azteca generated by more than 80,000 fans, Gordon heard the manager and turned to him.

Once Aguirre had the 25-year-old's attention, he had just two words: 'F*** you!'

He didn't even look at the Barcelona star as he delivered his expletive slingshot, and instead pulled a comical smiling face.

Gordon reacted with good humour, smiling back at him, and went on his way.

None of the mockery appeared to put the £69.3million star off, as he had arguably the best night of his England career in the 3-2 win.

Gordon won the penalty in the second half which Kane converted, giving England a two-goal gap which proved pivotal.

He was a threat throughout the match and, when the time came to knuckle down and defend, he dropped into midfield and put in a strong shift.

Aguirre will not get another chance to dig out Gordon in the Mexico post as he has already stepped down as their manager.

He led them to the last 16, which is typical for Mexico - they have now exited the World Cup at this stage in eight of the last nine editions.

'I would have liked to say goodbye to my people with a victory. That hurts. We tried,' he said.

'The players need to leave with their heads held high. Today it could not ‌be. We failed to capitalise, but I want to thank them all.

'I leave with a lot of pride. These players made me very happy. We recovered the sense of belonging and the identity of this team.'
