France defeated Paraguay 1-0, while Norway defeated Brazil 2-1. European teams won both direct meetings with South American sides.

Away against the host nations, England narrowly beat Mexico 3-2, while Belgium, despite various disadvantages, also eliminated the USA 4-1 away, sending all three host nations crashing out.

In the only all-European clash of the Round of 16, Spain defeated Portugal 1-0.

Seven European teams advanced to the Round of 16. The remaining European team yet to play is Switzerland, who will face South American team Colombia.
