Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly urged Barcola to resist the lucrative transfer temptation from Liverpool and stay at Paris Saint-Germain to continue his development.

Barcola is one of the players Liverpool are considering to fill the void left by Mohamed Salah, who is set to leave on a free transfer at the end of next season. Liverpool have set their sights on the winger, currently with the French national team at the World Cup, after RB Leipzig's Jean-Diomandé favored a move to Paris Saint-Germain. Despite Diomandé's potential arrival, Champions League winners Paris insist they have no intention of selling Barcola, valuing the 23-year-old at over £100 million.

Desailly said: "Barcola doesn't need to leave Paris, he's too young. Deschamps is teaching him and giving him opportunities. I thought Barcola wouldn't be able to start and play 90 minutes in international games because he was too weak defensively. You know, we have four attacking players up front, putting Barcola into the system could be another weakness because he lacks defensive effort. Look at his games for Paris, or his performances for the national team in the Euros, he has this weakness. He's still young, his concentration and defensive awareness don't keep up with his speed when he goes forward. He doesn't try to get back."

Desailly added: "So he's growing, learning, building a winning mentality on both offense and defense – structurally serving the team without the ball, while also being able to decide games like a veteran. So should he move to the Premier League? Not yet, not at all. Sorry, Arsenal and Liverpool fans. He should stay at Paris Saint-Germain, play 25 games each season, and grow in that system."
