Manchester United will be active in the transfer market this summer as they look to plug the midfield gap for new boss Michael Carrick

Manchester United will look to carry the momentum of their third-place Premier League finish forward into next season with some new signings. And they may have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Bournemouth's Alex Scott.

After turning his former club's season around, Michael Carrick has now taken the reins permanently at United. They'll have Champions League football to contend with next season and will likely need to reinforce various positions.

Priority No. 1, however, is filling the hole left by Casemiro. Ederson is expected to arrive from Atalanta imminently, but a second midfield arrival is on the club's agenda and Scott is said to top their wishlist.

Bournemouth reportedly ruled out selling him this summer and hoped to tie him down to a new deal. However, his response to contract offers will act as music to United's ears. Mirror Football takes a look at the latest transfer updates from Old Trafford.

Alex Scott's response

United's hunt for a headline midfield talent has taken several twists this summer. Their pursuit of Mateus Fernandes fell short, with the Portuguese player joining Tottenham for £85m.

Scott has long been admired by United and The Athletic reports that he has now rejected multiple contract offers from the Cherries. The report claims that Scott is United's top priority when it comes to a midfield acquisition, despite Bournemouth insisting he is not for sale this summer.

The player's current deal expires in 2028 and previous reports hinted that the Guernsey-born player would be keen on a transfer to Old Trafford.

Aurelien Tchouameni green light

Another name linked with United this window is Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni. Reports claim contact has been made regarding a potential move for the Frenchman, whose price is set at a supposed £85m.

Former AC Milan and Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly believes his compatriot would want to move to England and would be a "perfect" leader in the middle of the park for United.

"I'm sure Aurelien Tchouameni would move to the Premier League, and Manchester United is still a massive club; a massive name," he told Sportscasting.com.

"He had a difficult season, but at least he shows leadership. That's why when you talk about Ibrahima Konate or Tchouameni, I'll always choose Tchouameni because of his desire. And he also wears my No. 8 on his back, so I love him for this!

"I believe that he has that little bit of leadership and the desire to bring the team all together. So it could be a good move for him, just like when Raphael Varane swapped Madrid for Manchester back in the day. So why not? I would encourage him to go for it and try the Premier League."
