Belgium forward Lukaku was interviewed ahead of the FIFA World Cup quarter-final match against Spain.

On facing Spain

"For many players, this is a moment to take a step forward. We need a perfect game to beat Spain.

"This match is very similar to the 2018 quarter-final against Brazil, although our current lineup is quite different. The players are very confident – sometimes we need to control that confidence a bit."

"It will be a completely different game. Spain play total football. They have kept a clean sheet at this FIFA World Cup, and their attack is excellent. We have to play a perfect game. This is a huge challenge, and we will never back down. We also have the strength to cause problems for Spain."

On their fifth time reaching the quarter-finals of a major tournament

"If you’ve come this far, why would you think about going home? For many players on the team, this is an opportunity to go even further. As an experienced player, you have to help them. If you want to progress in the FIFA World Cup, you have to perform well in this environment."

On scoring 3 goals with three shots on target

"Well, it's not about individuals; it's about the team. That's my thinking. The national team coach gave me a role, and I'll try to adapt. I spent a lot of time in training practicing shooting and one-on-one skills. I also listen to the advice of the older players. Everything is going in the right direction at the moment, especially after a difficult season."

On his future

"I want to stay with the national team for as long as possible. But this year has been very difficult for me. The national team coach visited me in April and clearly told me the role I needed to play. Starting every FIFA World Cup game would be self-destructive for me. The current situation is working in my favor. I can have an impact on and off the field. If players are frustrated, I can talk to them. Everything is about the team.
