Chelsea legend Hasselbaink suggested in an interview with WhoScored that new coach Xabi Alonso should sign John Stones this summer to boost the team's experience.

Hasselbaink told WhoScored: "I would love to see Alonso sign Stones, who is now a free agent."

"Everyone will say, 'He's often injured.' But I think this year he would be a very good signing for Chelsea because Chelsea doesn't play in the Champions League, nor does it have European commitments, so it's basically one match a week."

"He'll have more rest time and can bring a lot of experience. Therefore, he can play at least 30 games."

Stones previously ended his ten-year tenure at Manchester City, leaving before the World Cup this summer, and is currently a free agent.

Hasselbaink also discussed young Chelsea striker Liam Delap. Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich last summer, but was affected by a severe hamstring injury last season and failed to regain consistent form after his return.

Hasselbaink believes Delap needs more playing time to restart his career.

He said: "He needs games. He can't go through another season like last season. If that means he needs to go out on loan or do something else, then he should do it because he's too young to sit on the bench all the time."

"He needs to restart his career, score goals again, and get his feeling back. Because every time he played for Chelsea, it looked a bit difficult for him."

Hasselbaink expressed that he still believes in Delap's potential: "I think he's a very good player and I think he has the chance to be a top-four team level striker, but he needs games."

He added that big clubs like Chelsea often don't have much time for young players to make mistakes: "He needs the coach to give him confidence, to tell him not to worry about the first or second performance, just go and play. But Chelsea needed goals immediately at the time, so it was difficult to give him five consecutive games, which is why they chose to start Pedro."

"That's the problem with big clubs: you don't get time. You won't be given five consecutive games. So he needs another year to play more than thirty games and then rebuild his career."
