According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona admire Cristian Romero, but if they sign a center-back, they prefer a left-footed player.

This summer, Barcelona are not in urgent need of signing a center-back. However, as Mundo Deportivo previously reported, Araujo's future could still affect Barça's plans in the remaining month and a half of the transfer window, so this door is not completely closed.
Barça are always ready to analyze suitable options in the market. Internally, the club holds the 28-year-old Argentine center-back Cristian Romero in high regard. His contract with Tottenham Hotspur expires in 2029. His ability in the central defense is unquestionable and was once again proven during the World Cup.
However, if Barça needs to enter the market for a center-back, one factor would go against the Argentine international: he is right-footed. After Iñigo Martínez's departure, Barça lacks a left-footed center-back. Only Gerard Martín fits this profile, and he has performed well in this position since the middle of last season, partnering with Cubarsí or Eric García.
Therefore, before giving up due to Inter Milan's high demands, Barça had set its sights on Bastoni, precisely because of his proficiency with his left foot and strong ball-playing ability.
This is not the first time Romero has been on Barça's radar. In the summer of 2021, he had just been bought out by Atalanta when Messi, still uncertain whether he could stay at Barça, suggested the club sign Romero.
Ultimately, due to Barça's financial problems, Messi did not stay at Barça, nor did Romero land in La Liga. Tottenham Hotspur loaned him on August 6, 2021, and then bought him outright for 50 million euros the following year.
