According to Bild, the German Football Association has refused to support Infantino's re-election bid for FIFA president.

The German Football Association has run out of patience with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. German FA President Bernd Neuendorf began to distance himself from Infantino at the latest after American forward Balogun's red card suspension in the round of 16 match against Belgium was overturned. Previously, then-US President Donald Trump had called Infantino. The German FA confirmed this situation.

During the FIFA World Cup, Elxan Mammadov from Azerbaijan, FIFA's head of European affairs, visited 16 participating European football associations and lobbied for a pre-drafted letter of support. This letter was related to Infantino's plan to run for election at the FIFA Congress on March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco. Neuendorf refused to sign, while some other associations did sign, and reportedly regretted it after the Balogun incident.

However, Infantino's re-election is almost a foregone conclusion. The continental football associations of Africa, Asia, and South America have already pledged their support for him.

The real risk comes from another direction: the International Olympic Committee. Infantino, as FIFA President, is also a member of the International Olympic Committee, and the British organization FairSquare has filed a complaint against him with the IOC. The organization accuses Infantino of violating the IOC's rules on political neutrality due to his close relationship with Trump. Infantino had presented Trump with the so-called FIFA Peace Prize. Infantino also joined Trump's newly formed Peace Committee, an institution that most European leaders do not recognize. IOC President Kirsty Coventry has indicated that Infantino's related incidents will be addressed.
