Newcastle will face Liverpool at St. James' Park in their Premier League season opener. This highly anticipated match now carries special emotional significance due to the passing of Kevin Keegan.

Both clubs have deep connections with the English football legend. Keegan enjoyed glorious years at Liverpool and left an indelible mark at Newcastle, so fans of both teams hold him in high regard.

The organization wrote on social media: "We will pay tribute to one of Newcastle's most important figures in the season opener against Liverpool on Sunday, August 23."

Keegan also achieved legendary status during his time at Liverpool. Between 1971 and 1977, he made 323 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 100 goals, before moving to Hamburger SV in Germany. During his time at Anfield, he helped the team win 3 league titles, 1 FA Cup, and the European Cup in 1977.

In the 1974 FA Cup final, Liverpool defeated Newcastle 3-0 at Wembley, with Keegan playing a key role in the team.

In 1982, Keegan joined Newcastle, then in the Second Division, and scored on his debut. He helped the team return to the top flight in 1984, quickly becoming a hero to fans on Tyneside.

What truly cemented his legendary status at Newcastle was taking charge of the team in 1992. At the time, Newcastle were in serious relegation trouble, even close to dropping into the old Third Division. But Keegan led the team to safety and secured promotion the following season.

During the Premier League era, he built a team renowned for attacking football, and Newcastle became known as "The Entertainers," one of the most entertaining sides in English football.

Keegan passed away this week at the age of 75 following an illness. Earlier this year, he publicly revealed that he was suffering from stage four cancer.
