With Klopp ushering in a new era at the German Football Association, a goalkeeper long thought to be forgotten, Lorius, has put himself forward for consideration for the German national team.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper believes that with his excellent performance at Schalke 04, he still has a chance to be selected for the German squad. To date, Karius has not played for the German senior national team. According to him, this situation could change.

Karius told the "Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung": "I don't know Klopp's plans. But now I'm playing in the Bundesliga with Schalke - the conditions are not bad. If I can perform at a top level, maybe I can become a candidate." At the same time, the goalkeeper also made it clear: "I will give everything for Schalke - what happens next, we'll see."

Klopp brings new hope

This personnel connection is all the more topical because Klopp and Karius have a shared history. The new national team coach brought Karius from Mainz to Liverpool in 2016. Now Klopp has officially taken over the German national team, signing until the 2030 World Cup, succeeding Nagelsmann.

For Karius, a return to the German national team would be a continuation of his excellent comeback. In January 2025, he joined Schalke 04 as a free agent and subsequently grew into a reliable pillar of the team, making an important contribution to Schalke's return to the Bundesliga. The club then extended his contract until 2028.

Karius not yet considering retirement

The goalkeeper is not considering saying goodbye to football. "I renewed my contract until 2028 in the summer, and if everything continues to go well, there's no reason not to extend the contract." He can even imagine ending his career at Schalke: "I can well imagine ending my career here. I'm not thinking about anything else at the moment."

In terms of competition, Karius also has clear goals: "If I can play at a high level for another five years, I will do so." Whether he can actually wear the German national team jersey now mainly depends on his performance in the Bundesliga - and the plans of national team coach Klopp.
