Manchester United have been given a significant update as they look to make further progress in the transfer market

Manchester United's next move will be intriguing as the transfer window cranks into life following the World Cup. A key summer is underway at Old Trafford as the club looks to build on the progress made under Michael Carrick.

With Champions League football a welcome addition to the schedule, United needed to strengthen their squad. The centre of the park was - and remains - a priority area. Progress has already been made in that department, with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arriving from Chelsea and Aston Villa, respectively.

French pair Manu Kone of Roma and Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni are on the radar, although a move for Bournemouth's Alex Scott looks to be off the table, with United unwilling to match the Cherries' £70m valuation.

Mourinho 'ready' to sanction deal

Jose Mourinho is reportedly ready to let Aurelien Tchouameni leave for United to help Real Madrid fund a swoop for Manchester City's Rodri. Tchouameni, who had an explosive bust-up with Federico Valverde last season, has been linked with the Red Devils all summer.

Following France's disappointing end to the World Cup, Tchouameni is now free to finalise his future, which looks to be away from Real, who have reappointed Mourinho as manager.

United are among the leading contenders to land the £68m-rated defensive midfielder. According to The Sun, if Real can offload Tchouameni for the aforementioned fee, it would help them to fund a swoop for Rodri.

The 30-year-old, fresh from winning the World Cup with Spain, is valued at around £85m but has just 12 months left on his City contract. While Mourinho is reluctant to let Tchouameni go, he would be prepared to do so if it means landing Rodri.

United consider Adams

After being priced out of a move for Scott, United could turn to one of his Bournemouth team-mates, Tyler Adams. According to the Daily Mail, the US international is available for around £35m, half of what the Cherries want for Scott.

While United are ready to back Carrick further in the transfer market, cut-price deals will help the PSR balance sheets. Like Scott, Adams, 27, has two years left on his contract and fits the mould of what United are looking for in a defensive midfielder.

His running and tackling stats compared favourably with those of other players of his ilk last season. Adams was linked with a January move to United, only to suffer a knee injury in Bournemouth's 4-4 draw at Old Trafford in December, which kept him out for two months.
