Match Report

Sandro Tonali and Andy Robertson made their Tottenham debuts in a penalty shootout victory over Sydney FC in the Sydney Super Cup.

The friendly ended 1-1 after 90 minutes as Mathys Tel's impressive opener just before the half-hour mark was cancelled out by Takahiro Sekine's second-half strike, though Spurs managed to clinch a 4-2 win on penalties.

Spurs were on top early on as Tel saw a long-range effort pushed away by Gus Hoefsloot, who had passed straight to the Frenchman, before Conor Gallagher failed to convert from Manor Solomon's cut-back in the 13th minute.

Rhys Youlley tested Martin Dubravka at the other end, but it was the Premier League side who took the lead as Tel picked out the top-right corner from a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Roberto De Zerbi's side pushed for a second goal but hit the woodwork either side of half-time; Gallagher struck the base of the right post before Luca Williams-Barnett's near-post effort cannoned off the bar.

Sydney, however, scored against the run of play in the 54th minute. Tiago Quintal's throughball was deflected into the path of Sekine by Spurs' Kota Takai, and the Sydney winger slotted past Dubravka.

Tonali tested Hoefsloot with a first-time attempt, which was parried away by the goalkeeper, before Yang Min-hyeok poked wide as Spurs could not find a winner in 90 minutes.

Luca Williams-Barnett started the shoot-out with a Panenka penalty, while Tonali and Robertson also scored from the spot for Spurs.

Dubravka saved Alexandar Popovic's penalty at 3-2, allowing Dane Scarlett to score the winning spot-kick for Spurs.

More positives for De Zerbi in pre-season

Though his side could not find a winner in normal time, there was still plenty of reason for optimism for De Zerbi.

His youthful side, mixed with some first-team stars, won the expected goals (xG) battle 1.43 to 0.72, while creating six big chances to Sydney's two.

Spurs also recorded 46 touches in the opposition box compared to Sydney's five, and saw positive signs from debutants Tonali and Robertson.

Robertson created two chances (joint-second most for Spurs) after coming on in the 65th minute, while Tonali won both of his duels and regained possession three times.

After wins over Auckland FC and Sydney, Spurs' next pre-season test comes against rivals Chelsea on Saturday.
