According to reports from Romano and several other journalists, Howe will step down as Newcastle United manager. Legendary player Alan Shearer, in an interview, praised Howe for bringing the team multiple Champions League qualifications and a League Cup title.

Alan Shearer stated: "I am very, very surprised by the news of Howe's departure from Newcastle. His resignation three weeks before the start of the new season is strangely timed.

"I don't know what happened, whether it was issues at the end of last season, or summer issues, or if he felt the club couldn't keep selling his best players anymore. My understanding is that the departure was Howe's own decision. All I want to say is, thank you. Thank you, Howe, for everything you've done for us.

"He gave me the best day as a Newcastle fan – that day at Wembley (2025 League Cup final, Newcastle 2-1 Liverpool). He gave us some incredible nights in the Champions League that we will never forget. He did a fantastic job for Newcastle, so a big thank you to Howe."

Reflecting further on Howe's coaching career, Shearer added: "It's been an incredible journey. I think the job he did was incredible – from when he took over with the team facing a real relegation threat, to stabilizing the situation, then leading the team up the league, bringing in some excellent players, and leading us to a final (2023 League Cup 0-2 Manchester United).

"We lost in that final, but he later took us back there and gave us the trophy we had longed for. As a player, I went to Wembley and lost; as a fan, I went to Wembley and lost. But I also had the privilege of winning at Wembley, thanks to Howe. Whatever happens next, Geordies will always be grateful for the day he gave us."
