Altobelli, a key player in Italy's 1982 World Cup triumph, praised Mancini's coaching abilities but also reminded him of his departure from the Italian national team to coach in Saudi Arabia.


Altobelli told La Repubblica: "Can I start with a 'but'? Mancini is an excellent coach who can manage any team, any strong team." He also said that he had messaged Mancini to congratulate him and wish him good luck, "because I want him to do well. However, the stain remains."

He said this refers to Mancini leaving his position as head coach of the Italian national team: "It was right for him to go to Saudi Arabia, it was a professional choice. But afterwards, you can't come back and say 'I'm sorry.' Once it's done, there's no regretting it."

Regarding Mancini's apology, Altobelli's stance was clear: "It's too late, unfortunately." In his opinion, whether fans will ultimately forgive Mancini depends on them: "I don't know if they will forgive him." Altobelli also emphasized that Mancini received a very rare second chance in the football world: "He got a second chance, not everyone gets one, it's almost unique. Let's see how he seizes it." The former striker believes that only results can change public perception of Mancini's return: "He can make the most of this golden opportunity. With good results, perhaps these things can be forgotten."

Finally, Altobelli also discussed Italy's new arrangements and Ranieri's role: "He is a great coach, someone I respect greatly, but I don't understand this decision. I accept it."
