Former Newcastle United player Stuart Pearce believes that Howe's sudden departure, coupled with the exit of several star players, could plunge Newcastle into a relegation battle next season.

Pearce said on talkSPORT Breakfast: "If you had asked me this question a year ago, I would have said Newcastle were a top Premier League team, already at European club level, and still seemingly growing."

"If you ask me now, I would say they look more like a mid-table Premier League team. If they're not careful and continue to lose players, coupled with a dip in form, they could find themselves on the brink of relegation."

"That's the fragility of the Premier League. Unfortunately, I've played in front of Newcastle fans, and they are truly amazing."

"I was delighted that Eddie (Howe) went there and gave the club a boost, and to see Newcastle rising again, because I still remember the glory days of Kevin (Keegan)'s era, and even earlier, when Bobby (Robson) was there."

"As I said, this is a club closely associated with great achievements and exciting football, and the Premier League needs a strong Newcastle United."

Pearce added: "It makes me a little sad. I think Newcastle has lost an excellent manager, and I'm a bit worried about their prospects for next season."

"Honestly, they might be closer to relegation today than to winning the Premier League title."
