According to Sport, Manchester City are interested in former La Liga goalkeeper Rulli, who could become Donnarumma's backup.

After the end of the Guardiola era, Manchester City are adjusting their squad, and Maresca has been chosen as the successor, attempting to replicate the glory Guardiola brought over the past decade. Regarding goalkeeper recruitment, Manchester City need to address the backup goalkeeper position – as Trafford is set to join Leeds United, ending his career at Manchester City. Considering that the role of a backup goalkeeper is not easy and playing opportunities are extremely limited (as Trafford left after only one season following his loan return from Burnley due to lack of playing time), choosing the right person is no small matter. According to Romano, the current main candidate is Olympique Marseille goalkeeper Rulli.

The member of Argentina's 2022 Qatar World Cup winning squad will serve as the second-choice goalkeeper, behind Donnarumma. Donnarumma has cemented his starting position with an excellent performance in his debut Premier League season, never relinquishing his starting spot since joining early last year, so even if Rulli eventually joins Manchester City, it will be difficult to challenge his status.

It is worth noting, however, that Rulli has just played an excellent season at Olympique Marseille, keeping 8 clean sheets in 29 Ligue 1 matches. For Spanish football fans, the Argentine is well-known for playing seven and a half seasons in La Liga: five years at Real Sociedad and two and a half years at Villarreal. As a Real Sociedad player, Rulli made 170 appearances; as a Villarreal player, he made 82 appearances, the most dazzling of which was the Europa League final against Manchester United, where he saved De Gea's decisive penalty after having just scored Villarreal's 11th penalty, becoming a team hero.
