Match Report

Leeds United came from 2-0 down to stun Liverpool with a 4-2 friendly victory in Chicago, with former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring twice.

Calvert-Lewin came off the bench at half-time when Daniel Farke's side were two goals behind, but he scored off two long throws from Ethan Ampadu, with fellow substitutes Brenden Aaronson and Sean Longstaff also on target.

Liverpool went ahead from the game's first corner in the sixth minute as Milos Kerkez directed Dominik Szoboszlai's delivery towards the far post with a back-heeled flick, allowing young centre-back Luke Chambers to power home.

Giorgi Mamardashvili then made a sharp reflex save from Lukas Nmecha's header, before Leeds suffered a blow in the 35th minute, losing Gabriel Gudmundsson to an apparent hamstring injury.

And Liverpool doubled their advantage through a beautifully worked goal only six minutes later, with Trey Nyoni's searching ball across the penalty area behind turned back into the middle by Jeremie Frimpong, for Florian Wirtz to apply the finishing touch.

Mamardashvili made another decent stop to repel Anton Stach's long-range piledriver shortly before half-time, which saw Andoni Iraola and Farke make four substitutions each.

With Wirtz and Alexander Isak among those withdrawn by Iraola, Leeds got on the front foot early in the second period, and their comeback began when Aaronson slotted beyond Mamardashvili following a poor giveaway from Kerkez.

Ampadu got the assist for that goal, having already caused Liverpool issues with his long throws into the area. Another of those hurls from the left side led to Leeds' 71st-minute equaliser, with Calvert-Lewin tapping in after Joe Rodon glanced the ball on.

Longstaff then saw his side-footed finish trickle into the bottom corner after he was found by Aaronson two minutes later, and Leeds made the victory safe via another close-range Calvert-Lewin strike six minutes from time, with Sebastiaan Bornauw applying the flick-on to Ampadu's throw on that occasion.

Calvert-Lewin haunts former rivals

Throughout his nine-year stint on Merseyside with Everton, Calvert-Lewin only beat Liverpool twice in 12 Premier League derbies (D5 L5), also being restricted to two goals versus the Reds.

But the big striker did find the net against them for Leeds in 2025-26, in a 3-3 draw at Elland Road last December. Here, he went one better in another six-goal thriller.

Having only been introduced at the interval, Calvert-Lewin led all players on the pitch for shots (four), shots on target (two), touches in the penalty area (six) and expected goals (1.22 xG).

Leeds were ultimately worthy victors, racking up 15 shots and 2.22 xG, compared to Liverpool's figures of nine shots and 1.14 xG.

Farke's side created a whopping 1.95 xG in the second half, when Liverpool were restricted to 0.43 xG. And, 1.58 of Leeds' overall xG tally came from set-pieces, suggesting their dead-ball prowess might continue this season.
