Liverpool forward Gakpo has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur throughout the summer. Responding to the speculation, former Tottenham defender Alderweireld said he cannot understand why Liverpool would sell Gakpo, describing him as a core player that any team needs.

Alderweireld said: "I don't understand why Liverpool would sell Gakpo to Tottenham Hotspur, because he is a core player that any team needs. He is strong and quick, can play on the left and right, and can cut inside and drive towards goal. When I watch him play, he is always in the box ready to finish. He is a very good player."

"Maybe after last season, when Liverpool struggled under Slot, they wanted to make big changes with the appointment of De Zerbi. But I think we have seen with the Dutch national team how good Gakpo is. If he goes to Tottenham, I think it would be an excellent signing—don't forget he has Premier League-winning experience and performed very well in the season before that title. He could make Tottenham stronger and Liverpool weaker, and both teams are fighting for a Champions League place."

Despite Liverpool's disappointing campaign last season, Alderweireld believes that if Manchester City's key midfielder Rodri leaves for Real Madrid, Liverpool could become title contenders and challenge defending champions Arsenal.

Alderweireld said: "Rodri is crucial to Manchester City. We saw this when he was injured—it showed how much they depend on him. His role in City's system is vital, and tactically, he is essential for them to win so many games and titles."

"If Rodri transfers to Real Madrid, this season's title race will be wide open, and Liverpool, Manchester United, and even Tottenham will have a genuine chance to challenge Arsenal."
