Vincent Kompany played down the seriousness of Joshua Kimmich's absence against Aston Villa, claiming Bayern Munich "don't want to take any risks".

Bayern earned a 2-1 win over Villa at Kai Tak Sports Park, with Kim Jae-Min and Luis Diaz scoring the goals, though they had to hold on at the end.

Villa launched a late fightback in the final 10 minutes, pulling one goal back through Joao Gomes, while Manuel Neuer made a stunning save to deny Tammy Abraham an equaliser.

One player not involved for Bayern on Friday was Joshua Kimmich, who remained on the bench despite training with the team earlier in the day.

Kompany admitted it was an issue that was lingering from the World Cup, but he does expect it to impact the start of Bayern's season.

"He has a little bit of something he still carries from the World Cup," Kompany said.

"He trained [on Friday] morning but wasn't involved in the game. We don't want to take any risks before the start of the season.

"We think he'll be fine, but we chose to be careful with him."

Bayern dominated for large parts of the contest against Villa, having 16 shots in total while getting half of those on target.

And they could easily have won by a much bigger margin, with Marco Bizot making some impressive saves as well as Diaz having an effort saved on the line.

"We're trying to find our form as quickly as possible, but at this stage of pre-season against a strong Villa side, I was really pleased with our performance," Kompany added.

"To be honest, I was impressed with all the players. It's difficult to go into these games with so many players still to come back. Obviously, some players are still young, some have never played against a team of this level.

"But for example, if I look at Tim [Binder] and Maycon [Zaragoza], how they defended, how they fought, the duels they went into, I know how tough it is to come up with a good performance.

"Also, the energy we had in midfield with Pavlo [Aleksandar Pavlovic], [Tom] Bischof, Konny [Laimer], who helps us anywhere we need him.

"We put a lot of time and energy into developing these players. This is a bit of a reward for the work we did with these young players. I was happy with that."
