According to Spanish newspaper Sport, De Jong might reconsider his future at Barcelona if the club signs newly crowned world champion Rodri.

The newspaper states that if Barcelona can indeed sign the 28-year-old from Manchester City, De Jong might yield his central midfield position to Rodri.

In the worst-case scenario, De Jong could even lose his place entirely in Hansi Flick's squad. It is claimed that in such a situation, De Jong might also consider leaving the club.

The 27-year-old extended his contract with Barcelona last October until the end of June 2029. Negotiations had been ongoing for a long time, and at one point, his departure was not ruled out. However, both parties eventually reached an agreement.

In the past season, De Jong was an important part of Barcelona's midfield. Across all competitions, Flick used him 38 times, contributing 1 goal and 8 assists. He then participated in the World Cup in the United States with the Netherlands national team, starting in 4 matches before the Dutch side was eliminated by Morocco in the round of 16.

Since then, De Jong has struggled with knee problems. During pre-season training, he could only train with limitations. Barcelona is now asking him to undergo surgery because conservative treatment has shown little progress. In any case, the Dutch player will miss the start of the season.

Rodri's transfer to Barcelona is not yet finalized. Although the Spanish midfielder has reportedly agreed to join Barcelona and closed the door on a move to Real Madrid, Barcelona still needs to continue negotiations with Manchester City.

Rodri's contract with Manchester City does not expire until the summer of 2027. According to media reports, Manchester City is asking for 50 to 60 million euros, which financially strained Barcelona will find difficult to afford.
