Van der Vaart criticized Brandt's reception in Amsterdam on the Dutch national broadcaster NOS, believing the reaction was excessive.

Commentator Thierry Baudet on the program suggested that Brandt's playing style was somewhat similar to Van der Vaart's, but Van der Vaart immediately denied the comparison. He said, "Oh, come on, he's not even 20% of my level back then." However, Van der Vaart then gave a positive assessment.
He said, "I followed him in Germany, and he often started from the left wing. He's very calm, and the first impression is excellent. We can also see that he will help young players."
The former Ajax player also expressed dissatisfaction with Brandt's welcoming scene. He said, "I also have to say that I'm tired of those who are overly excited about this transfer."
Van der Vaart continued, "At the time, people were almost saying, 'This is a great honor.' Come on, Ajax isn't that small. Ajax is a big club, everyone knows who Ajax is."
The former Dutch international concluded, "Many players want to join a club like this. Especially when you see Jordi Cruyff at the helm, the team has plans and ideas, wants to reach the top, and also has some financial resources."
