Francesco Letizia (Sportitalia): Hello, Coach. In your public statements since arriving at Milan, you have repeatedly emphasized a core tactical and philosophical concept: “instilling and fostering the team’s culture.” This echoes the idea of “building a big family” that you just mentioned and brings to mind your passionate early coaching career at Casa Pia. My question is: at a giant club like Milan, with such a rich and glorious history, is it more challenging to instill and reshape the club’s culture, or is it more difficult tactically to convince the current players to abandon their defensive mentality, press high up the pitch, and push the defensive line forward aggressively?
In my opinion, what is extremely rare and valuable is the genuine sense of warmth and camaraderie that has filled every corner of this place ever since I first stepped into Milanello. You can feel a heartfelt sense of cohesion and dedication among every logistics staff member, worker, and employee who quietly goes about their work here every day.
Therefore, our work is much smoother in this regard because this foundation already exists. Our task is simply to pass on this precious sense of family warmth and belonging to every new player who joins our team, helping them realize that they are becoming part of this great story. Given the existing foundation, this is not difficult.
As for the transformation of our football tactics, our players have demonstrated an extremely high level of tactical understanding and are working very hard to adapt to the completely different tactical system we have introduced compared with what they experienced previously. On the field, to implement our blueprint, they must maintain a fearless and unwavering tactical commitment. In the pre-season warm-up matches that have already concluded, we have been very pleased to see our players display such tactical courage. The team has also made significant improvements in many areas of tactical weakness, which has impressed the coaching staff.
I really can't simply judge which of these two challenges is more difficult. The pace at which we implement the entire new plan and fully integrate our tactics will largely depend on the points and results we accumulate throughout the season. But the most tangible feeling I can share with you right now is that the unique Milan dressing-room culture—like a big family, praised by world football for decades—is still vibrant at Milanello. It has never faded.
Federico Masini (Tuttosport): Good afternoon, Coach, and welcome to Milan. I would like to ask you about Diego Moreira's tactical role, given his excellent versatility. Fans and insiders are very curious to know which position would best maximize his strengths in your system. My second question is brief: although I know coaches usually do not comment publicly on individual players, since you began summer training and preparations, which player's attitude and performance in daily training have impressed you the most?
Regarding Diego Moreira, I currently prefer to use him as an attacking wing-back in a three-defender system, or as an extremely aggressive winger. I believe this tactical role can best bring out his physical potential and dribbling skills. While our team has other versatile players who can fill different positions based on tactical needs, I still believe the wing-back or winger position is where he can shine the most.
As for who surprised me the most during training, to be honest, this is a sweet problem for me, because everyone performed so well that it was very difficult to choose. I have to say that I genuinely admire this young player, Cissé. I love Cissé's performance, but I hope he doesn't watch this press conference live, otherwise I'm worried his confidence will soar and he might relax in subsequent training (laughs).
If we are to find a perfect benchmark embodying all of Milan’s core spiritual values, behavioral norms, and professional qualities, that person must be Matteo Gabbia. From his impeccable and disciplined style of dress and his eloquence when speaking to his diligent efforts on the training ground, he is a true professional. When I first arrived here, a senior club staff member told me that if I wanted to find a perfect model who symbolized Milan’s values in the locker room, I should simply speak with Matteo Gabbia for a few moments and watch one of his training sessions—and I would understand.
However, during this high-intensity training period, every member of the squad has provided great tactical support and spiritual motivation, giving their best without reservation. The long season will never be smooth sailing, and we will certainly face defeats and extremely difficult battles. But as long as my players continue to show their current professional attitude and fighting spirit, I will always be their strongest support, dedicating everything I have to defending and supporting them.
