According to the Metro, Chelsea legend Claude Petit has urged the club to replace error-prone goalkeeper Robert Sánchez before the transfer window closes, suggesting that if Chelsea need a new goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez would be a good choice.

In the early hours of Tuesday (CEST), Xabi Alonso's team got off to a winning start as Chelsea beat local rivals Fulham 3-2. Chelsea showcased their attacking prowess this season, with Pedrо, Morgan Rogers, and Palmer all scoring.

However, at the other end of the pitch, several defensive errors by Chelsea goalkeeper Sánchez almost cost Alonso and his new team dearly. Sánchez had a particularly difficult night, and the new Chelsea manager is already facing calls to replace his current number one.

"It is a very difficult position because you do not have anyone behind you, but we know Sánchez," former Chelsea defender Claude Petit told ESPNFC. "We have known him for a long time, and we know he makes mistakes."

"But when you play for a club like Chelsea and see the performance of the team's attack—they were almost impeccable, with three players scoring three goals away from home, which is excellent—you can't waste all that with silly mistakes.

"That's the problem. Xabi Alonso needs to find someone else as soon as possible. This has been an issue for some time, and we don't want to see it happen again."

"No offense to Sánchez—we tried it, but it didn't work. He can't step up and save the club in crucial moments, so we have to find another goalkeeper."

For this reason, former Chelsea midfielder Petit believes that if the price is low enough, Emiliano Martínez, who has currently lost his starting spot at Aston Villa, would be a suitable candidate.

The experienced Argentine international goalkeeper came close to joining Juventus after the World Cup, but the deal ultimately fell through.

Aston Villa signed Amadou Onana earlier this month and started Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal in their 0-4 defeat to Brighton on Sunday.

Petit said that even if Emiliano Martínez is only a short-term solution to a long-term problem, he could prove to be a shrewd signing.

“Only £10 million?” he said in an interview with Oddschecker, discussing Emiliano Martínez’s potential transfer fee.

"Well, people might ask me about Emiliano Martínez, and I always think about the national team and what he did during the World Cup."

"We have known Emiliano Martínez for a long time. But I have to be honest—I like this goalkeeper. Even if he tries to influence opponents' mentality and shows some bad behavior on the pitch, he has the personality and leadership qualities needed.

"At Chelsea, it could be very interesting, given his passion and ambition. He is not afraid to communicate with players and will speak his mind directly.

"It would be great to see that kind of leadership alongside Bruno Fernandes in midfield. I don't know if he will leave, but there is no doubt that if Chelsea need to replace a goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez would be an option."
