According to English media, during Chelsea's 4-3 victory over Brighton, the match officials encountered a rare equipment malfunction affecting their wireless communication system in the second half. Referee Michael Oliver, assistant referees, fourth official, and the VAR team at Stockley Park temporarily lost the ability to communicate with each other through their standard wireless radio system.

At the start of the second half on Sunday, Oliver was unable to use his standard communication headset. The BBC reported this may have been the first time in nearly 20 years that a Premier League refereeing team was unable to use wireless communication for an entire 45-minute period.

English referees began testing microphones and headsets in the 1999-2000 season, and since the 2006-07 season, more advanced wireless communication technology has gradually become standard. There have been previous instances of battery or signal failures, but typically the match would be briefly stopped while technicians resolved the issue. This time, on-site diagnostics determined the equipment malfunction could not be fixed, so the refereeing team had to resort to more traditional communication methods.

The main issue was that the system failed to filter out crowd noise effectively. Normally, shouting, singing, and cheering from spectators are filtered out to ensure clear communication between referees. However, during this match, Oliver, assistant referees Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring, and fourth official Tom Bramall all struggled to hear each other.

The communication failure also directly impacted VAR operations. Video assistant referee Andrew Kitchen could not communicate directly with Oliver as usual, and the head referee's description of key incidents on the pitch such as penalty decisions and red cards is normally a critical part of the VAR process.

To compensate, VAR continued to operate using a backup system, communicating via messages sent to the head referee's watch, while Kitchen remained able to contact fourth official Bramall via radio.

This also meant that during reviews, VAR had to rely more heavily on the video assistant referee's own judgment rather than combining it with the head referee's description of events on the pitch as is standard procedure.

Despite the technical difficulties, the match proceeded without major incident, with Chelsea defeating Brighton 4-3.
