Everton’s move for Joshua Zirkzee is off — and the Merseyside club retain hope that they can conclude a deal for Monaco striker Folarin Balogun instead.

Everton had already agreed a deal to sign USA international Balogun, only for doubts to emerge over the move. The Premier League side are aiming to reduce the initial fee for Balogun, with increased bonuses in the deal.

Previously, Monaco sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, stated the deal for Balogun consisted of an initial €45million (£38.58m; $52.3m) plus €5million (£4.3m; $5.8m) in potential add-ons had been agreed between the two clubs.

Meanwhile, Everton sources said the deal was worth in the region of £40million ($54m; €46.7m).

Everton made an offer to United for Zirkzee but that was rejected, with the Old Trafford club felt they did not have enough time to secure a replacement ahead of the 11pm BST (6pm ET) deadline.
