Scott McTominay has assured fans he is "fine" after reports emerged that he is set to undergo heart surgery. The 27-year-old Napoli star is expected to have an operation after being diagnosed with a minor, benign heart arrhythmia.

McTominay's condition means that his heart occasionally beats irregularly.

On Wednesday night, the Scottish midfielder attended the prestigious Serie A awards ceremony, Italy's equivalent of the PFA Player of the Year awards.

Speaking to reporters at the event, McTominay said: "I'm fine. This operation is something the club and I have been planning for a long time.

"We had already discussed it during pre-season. I will be out for a few weeks."

Arrhythmias can be treated with a procedure called pulsed field ablation, which uses electrical pulses to destroy the part of the heart causing the abnormal rhythm.

McTominay is expected to be out for weeks rather than months, but this means he will miss the first four games under new Scotland manager Steve Clarke.

The Scotland national team posted a brief statement on social media, saying: "Get well soon, Scott. Hope to see you in a Scotland shirt again soon."

So far this season, McTominay has started both of Napoli's Serie A matches.

The midfielder played the full 90 minutes in the opening 2-0 win against Genoa and then featured for 56 minutes against Como last Sunday.

McTominay rose to prominence under José Mourinho during his Manchester United career, making 255 appearances for the Red Devils before moving to Napoli in 2024.

When asked this week if a reunion with Mourinho was possible, McTominay said: "If José Mourinho called me to join Real Madrid, honestly, I would consider it."

For now, the midfielder's focus is on recovering and returning to the pitch for Napoli as soon as possible.

He wrote: "See you soon, Napoli. I won't be long."
