According to Sport, Barcelona's failure to sign a new center-back on deadline day has opened up more opportunities for Gerard Martín.

Barcelona's inability to bring in a left-footed center-back before the transfer window closed fundamentally changed Gerard Martín's situation. In recent days, Barcelona had pursued Twente defender Micky van de Ven, but the Eredivisie club rejected Barcelona's €8 million offer. Koundé can also fill in at center-back but is more of a backup option. Gerard Martín joined Barcelona from Cornellà as a left-back but ultimately found his niche at center-back.

His physical condition, defensive ability in open play, and continuous improvement convinced the German coach. Over time, he gradually earned more playing time and eventually proved he could perform at the highest level in a position with very little room for error.

The start of this season also sent a clear signal. In the 5-0 victory over Elche, Gerard Martín partnered Christensen at center-back. Against Athletic Club, Gerard Martín again featured at center-back, this time alongside Cubarsí. This indicates that Gerard Martín is no longer just an option on the flanks, and the German coach now views him as a genuine center-back candidate. With the window closed, his role may become even more prominent.

Had Barcelona successfully signed a center-back, he would have faced tougher competition. But with no signings made, Gerard Martín's situation is now vastly different from a few weeks ago. Cubarsí is an undisputed starter in defense, but the position next to him remains unsettled. Gerard Martín knows what it means to fight for a spot, having done so last season in a brand new position.
