Manchester United legend Roy Keane has praised Odegaard's start to the season and selected him as his favourite midfielder among Arsenal players.

When asked who his favourite player is in Mikel Arteta's squad, Gerrard said: "Right now, it has to be Odegaard.

"He controls the game. From my perspective, he's always dropping deep to win the ball back and pushing forward too.

"He's everywhere on the pitch. He wins the ball back and he's excellent in defence. Yes, I think he's strong."

According to Gerrard, Odegaard's defensive resilience in the match against Sunderland shows that Arteta's squad is ready to challenge for more trophies this season.

He continued: "It's difficult to defend the title. That's why the performance against Sunderland and that quality makes me feel they're ready to defend it.

When asked why defending the title is harder for teams, Gerrard said: "It's like this, everyone wants to beat the champions.

"You need that inner drive, because winning the league is already very difficult, and then you have to go even higher.

"Some players might think 'will I do this again,' because it's so hard.

"Last season, Arsenal slipped up in one place within a month, so you know how difficult it is. They were brilliant last season but it's still hard now.

"It could be similar this season, but when you have a squad like that, you just have to stay fresh.

"Manchester United didn't look fresh in the match against Manchester City. They played on Saturday and many players played on Saturday. After the Champions League, it's very difficult to prepare for such a big match on Saturday and Sunday with enough time to recover.
