It seems obvious in retrospect - there is just something wrong about a player called Mambo wearing any shirt number except five.

But Ebbsfleet United made an error that was called out on social media this weekend after they handed former Charlton defender Yado Mambo the No 18 shirt this summer.

Football fans suggested it was a bad call from Ebbsfleet not to make their defender Mambo No 5.

The social media joke was based around the 1999 song by German artist Lou Bega.

It was a catchy tune in which Bega sang about Angela, Pamela, Sandra and Rita, and managed to hit No 1 in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe.

And it seems the defender himself always thought he should be wearing No 5 on his back.

'I told my gaffer [Daryl McMahon] the same thing, but I don't think he believed me until over this weekend, when it has just blown up all over social media,' Mambo told BBC Radio Kent.

'Maybe now he'll take it a bit more seriously and change the numbers next season.

'It was one of my favourite songs at that age. At school a lot of kids used to sing it to me.'

But even though fate suggests he should have five plastered on his back, he'll have to convince club captain Dave Winfield to give up his own shirt for next season.

'He is a big guy so we can see,' Mambo added.

'I have heard of a campaign going round with people saying I should get the number 5 shirt. I can ask him at training and see what he says.'
