Real Madrid vs Fuenlabrada: Copa del Rey match preview
Real Madrid prevailed 2-0 in October's first leg at the Estadio Fernando Torres, courtesy of spot-kicks by Marco Asensio and Lucas Vázquez, but earned few plaudits for the manner of the win, with this newspaper's front-page headline the next morning - "Two penalties, a thousand yawns" - in keeping with their less than sparkling form this season.
Indeed, the Copa del Rey may rank considerably lower than LaLiga and the Champions League when Real draw up their list of desired silverware in pre-season, but, with Zinedine Zidane's men trailing leaders Barcelona by eight points in LaLiga, it appears likely to be Los Blancos' only hope of a domestic gong this term.
Segunda División B Fuenlabrada, based just outside Madrid, go to the Bernabéu with few betting on them to progress; however, this trip to the home of their illustrious neighbours is no less a special occasion for that, as evidenced by the speed with which the side's allocation of 2,300 tickets was gobbled up on Friday.
The opening leg in Fuenlabrada saw several players from Real's 'B' team, Castilla, and the Under-19s drafted into Zinedine Zidane's squad, with Álvaro Tejero handed a start alongside fringe first-teamers such as Marcos Llorente, Theo Hernández, Dani Ceballos and Borja Mayoral, and Franchu given a second-half run-out.
Zidane is once more set to rest a host of regulars, although his side will be by no means bereft of big names: speaking on Monday, the Frenchman confirmed that Gareth Bale, Keylor Navas and Mateo Kovacic, who are all returning from injury lay-offs, are to feature at the Bernabéu.
Central defender Jesús Vallejo is suspended for tonight's return after being sent off in Fuenlabrada.
With Zidane again set to give youth a go, some of those involved for Los Merengues will have the benefit of very recent experience of facing Fuenlabrada. On Saturday, Castilla met this evening's visitors in Segunda B, a goalless draw at the Fernando Torres seeing 'Fuenla' end the weekend five points clear at the top of Group I of Spain's regionalised third tier.
Since losing to Real a month ago, Fuenlabrada have carried on from where they had left off before then, winning four and drawing two of their six games to continue their sterling start to 2017/18; indeed, that defeat is one of just two in 19 games in all competitions so far.
Fuenlabrada are rated at 25/1 just to win on the night - let alone turn the fourth-round tie around - but, buoyed by the fine season his team is enjoying, coach Antonio Calderón spoke in confident tones in his pre-match press conference. "We're going to go out there to compete and to turn the tie around," he declared. "The lads know it'll be difficult, but they believe it's possible."
Defender Paco Candela is banned after picking up two quickfire bookings in the first leg, while Calderón confirmed on Monday that Dani Fernández and Jaume Sobregrau are not expected to be fit.
