Power Dynamos Football Club edged Green Eagles 1-0 in a tightly contested MTN Super League Week 16 fixture to climb to the summit of the league table.

Defender, Dominic Chanda broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, rising highest at the far post to nod home and give the Kitwe giants a crucial first-half advantage.

The defending Zambia Premier league champions had chances to put the game to bed after the restart. Kenyan international, Moses Shumah was denied in a one-on-one situation in the 56th minute, while Frederick Mulambia squandered a gilt-edged opportunity, flashing a close-range header over the bar.

The contest took a dramatic twist in the 68th minute when Samuel Ayodeji was given his marching orders following a second yellow card, with the Red card leaving Power Dynamos to dig deep with ten men.

Green Eagles piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser, but the Power Dynamos backline held its shape, with goalkeeper Willard Mwanza pulling off a string of vital saves to keep the clean sheet intact.

Speaking after the match, head coach Osward Mutapa lauded his side’s resilience and fighting spirit. “We showed hunger and strong character, especially after the red card. The players gave everything,” Mutapa said.

The victory sent Power Dynamos top of the MTN Super League standings with 32 points from 16 matches. The Kitwe outfit would now turn their attention to a historic Copperbelt fixture away to Mufulira Wanderers in Mufulira.
