Gotzberg initially lost her case at the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber but then appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The 29-year-old said: "This was never just about football, but about whether I would be treated fairly and with respect at a crucial moment in my life. The ruling sends a clear message: pregnancy should never be seen as a problem, nor should it be a reason to deny female footballers job opportunities."

This ruling by the Lausanne court is historic because it is the first time a club has been formally found to have violated FIFA's maternity regulations. Gotzberg helped the team earn promotion to Serie A in the 2023-24 season and had earned a contract extension based on her performance. The two parties had agreed on the main terms of the contract before signing, but Gotzberg then discovered she was pregnant.

She was not obligated to disclose this information to Lazio at the time, but she chose to inform the club. Lazio, under owner Claudio Lotito, then withdrew from the agreement, a move that violated FIFA regulations.
