On returning to the England squad

I'm extremely proud to be back in the England squad. What happened in the summer was very disappointing, but I've put that behind me now. The new season has started, and I feel like I've had a pretty good start. I'm really happy to be back.

How disappointed were you to miss out on the England squad this summer? And how different do you feel now that you're back with the team?

Honestly, I was very disappointed at the time. When I found out I hadn't been selected, it was really tough, but I had to put it behind me. It took me a few weeks to really get over the news and then refocus on what I needed to do next to try and get back into the England squad. After that, I watched the World Cup like any other England fan.

I think when you miss out on something, it definitely becomes motivation. You have two choices when something like that happens. You can either shut yourself off, hide away, and not be the same person you were, and not strive for more; or you can choose the complete opposite and try to prove the manager wrong, which is what I've been trying to do.

I've known the manager since I was at Chelsea, so we've known each other for a while. I know what he likes and how he manages. So I've been trying my best to impress him, hoping to get back into the England squad. Now that I've been re-selected, I'm very grateful.

That was the first thing to congratulate you on. The second thing to congratulate you on is signing a new contract. Tell us about that—was it an easy decision to make at the time?

To be honest, it was an easy decision in the end. Of course, when the new manager first came in, I was a bit uncertain. I didn't know what he would be like because whenever a new manager and coaching staff come in, you never really know what to expect.

But from our first conversation, our first meeting with him, I could see that he's an excellent manager. I really like the way he manages players. He makes every player feel valued and makes everyone feel like they're part of the team.

For me, that was really important. And as training sessions and matches went by, I increasingly felt that he is a top coach with a very good coaching staff around him.

So after those initial conversations with him, I was very sure in my mind that I wanted to stay here and move forward. From a team perspective, I also believe that we can achieve a lot this season. If we can put all these things together, I think we'll have an excellent season.
