According to Di Marzio, Brentford and Italy defender Michael Kayode was interviewed during preparations for the Nations League, discussing missing the World Cup, turning down Nigeria, and his idol Maldini, among other topics.

The Italian national team began its second day of preparations in Coverciano for the upcoming Nations League matches, which include fixtures against Belgium, France, and two matches against Turkey. Following coach Mancini's remarks, former Fiorentina defender and current Brentford player Kayode also gave an interview at a press conference.

Regarding Italy's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Kayode said: "Missing the World Cup was painful, but when bad things happen, it can also be a starting point for a fresh start. I want to tell the fans to remain calm; we are here to work and to start a new cycle."

Speaking about his decision to decline Nigeria and choose to play for Italy, Kayode stated: "I have always been part of the Italian youth national teams at various levels. Nigeria contacted me, but for anyone, it's an honor to represent Italy." The player, born in 2004, then spoke about his idol: "There are many full-backs I admire, but Maldini has always been one I've paid special attention to. He was exceptional in that position."

Kayode concluded by discussing his experience moving from the Juventus youth team to Gozzano and entering professional football through lower leagues: "That experience gave me the strength to reach my current level. I grew a lot at Gozzano. My advice to young players is not to get discouraged and to also accept playing in lower leagues." Gozzano currently competes in Serie D, the fourth tier of Italian football.
